my mothers lap

For my first “interior product” assignment I had to design a chair.

First we had to choose the material, the type of chair we want to make and what fascination or inspiration we wanted to use in the design. Then we had to make a 1:1 sketch of the chair which shows how the chair is about to look like or feel.

Then we had to make a prototype.

I chose to make a rocking chair from wood with a fascination for soft textiles. I wanted to make a chair that almost feels as nice as sitting on your mothers lap. It had to be soft, body adjustable and it had to rock. I made my 1:1 sketch out of steel because that was quicker and a easy way to look if the form I was imagining would work as I wanted it to.

At the moment I am busy with making the prototype, but I still have to make a couple of changes about the under construction.

the five nuns / material study

The assignment was to choose an existing building (woontorens Breda/nonenveld) and make a more apstract model of it. This ment that we did not copy the building with all it´s details but choose an aspect and

illustrate our interpretation of it in a model.

The building was a livingcomplex consisting of five towers which where surounded by a parking garage. The towers had four different sides which all had very obvious details. But the aspect that for me stood out the most was the shyniness of the building. It was

interessting to make a more apstract version of a

building and only concentrate on one aspect.

personal space

The assignment was to design a personal space using the cardboard.

I decided to make a space where people can tell about all their problems, or fears, or secrets. I wanted to create a space that would make it easier for people to open up. The cabine I designed consist of walls that are made out of elastic band and piecec of the carboard. I used the wavestructure of the cardboard to weave the elastic band through. This created a partially transparent walls that allowed enough light to come in and still give the feeling of privacy. The intention is that you go inside the cabine and write down what you want to tell and then hang up your letter on the pieces of cardboard. The letter will be held by the elastic band that is woven over the cardboard. This way everybody who uses the cabine can read your anonymous letter and see that he or she is not the only one with problems and then maybe feels better about sharing their story.

slow bazar

For this assignment we had to define for ourselves how we interpret the word “slow”. Then choose a product that you can sell as a “slow” product, communicating the terms you choose for “slow”. Design a shop (4mx4mx4m) where you can sell this product.

I chose to sell peelings. I wanted to create a buffet of fresh and natural ingredients where the client can make his own peeling. Ingredients are things like salts, seeds, clay, curd, honey, lemon, etc. I wanted to put an emphasis on the ingredients why the interior had to be very minimalistic but still practical so that the client can try out the peeling and wash it of. The buffet is made out of polished concrete with holes in it for the removable bowls. The bowls are made of silicon and have very bright colors matching to the ingredient they hold.

dermatologist

For this assignment we had to make a new design for a skin clinic that is situated in Rotterdam. There had to be three examination rooms, a staff kitchen, toilets, room for waiting, a coffee machine, a reception, a storage room and an office for the doctor.

For my design I looked at what the skin is to a person. Although our skin is our barrier from the outside world for most people this barrier goes even further. People have a big need for privacy and personal space especially when going to the doctor. That is why I divided the waiting room into three areas always close to the examination room. That way a patient does not feel uncomfortable or looked at.

A4 paper lounge

For this assignment we had to research the qualities of paper to then choose one quality we wanted to illustrate by creating something that emphasizes or makes use of the room.
The quality we chose was strength. We wanted to make something that people can test with their own body weight.

self destruction construction

For this assignment we had to make a construction that can hold 50 kilos. We could chose what the weight would be as long as it was essential for or to the construction.

This was a really interesting assignment because we managed to make the end result not only something that was working construction wise but also create a picture that is almost poetic.

The weight of the ice is hold up by the wooden construction that is only put together, not fixed tightly or glued. As the ice melts the water runs to the bottom of the bin en drips through the holes into the bin underneath. The second bin rests on another wooden construction that is only held from collapsing through two rubber bands. The more water gets into the bin the more the elastic bands give in and push the legs of the upper construction to the sides. Finally the hole construction destroys itself.

one night stay

The assignment was to make a composition consisting of three cubes. Then transform the composition into a house. A “one night stay”. It had to be for two people that are doing a bike tour and need a place to sleep. There is no electricity so only the main necessities are needed. Also there had to be a little stove and a place to put the bikes. A single cube could not be bigger than 4mx4mx4m.

garbage composition

The purpose of this assignment was to learn a little bit more about different materials and about composition.

We had to collect five items that each consisted out of a different material. Out of those five things we had to create a composition that was most appealing to us. Then we had to measure our composition and make a drawing of it. The next step was to create a unity of the composition by making it out of one color (white). Then we had to divide the composition into three parts and make it consisting of three different materials.

roomdevider

This assignment was the first in my new study. We had to create a room divider out of cardboard.

Normally a room divider helps to divide a big room into smaller sections where you can then place different types of furniture that are used for different purposes.

We interpreted the room divider as an object that really divides the room. And because the emphasis was on the “room” we took all the

furniture out of the room to make the room divider so that it could not distract. The cardboard was used as a binding element to make the “furniture room divider” appear more like a unity.
